Welcome to the Southside
This photo was taken looking at the southwestern corner of the building.
The lighter colored area is the lime plastered section and the unplastered cob
is the reddish portion. There is a bit of superadobe in the left had portion of the photo.
The fencing you see is part of our "Kitchen" garden and is the view you will find
by looking
out the one large window in the house. Overall I have a lot of windows, but
not a lot of window area. The reason for this is that I consider our location to
be more of a cooling area as the winters are short and mild but the summers are long
and hot. I try to minimize solar gain but still have a fair amount of light get into
the house.
The ferro-cement dome roof with the smoke pouring out is in the center of an octagon.
The octagon roof area is only covered with roll roofing at this point. Eventually the entire roof
will be ferro-cement.
Ok for you observant folks, yup there is a satellite dish in the yard. That one is actually
not active but we do have one active. When you live in a family you end up making compromises.
This is my compromise to my wife. We do live in a very rural area and she has been kind
enough to endure many tough times in building this house so it seems a small price to pay.
